Xero Keyboard Shortcuts

Are you a regular user of Xero as a bookkeeper or an accountant? Or perhaps you manage your own books? Either way do you want to increase your productivity in Xero and get things done faster? One way to do so is to harness the power of keyboard shortcuts in Xero. We have you covered with some of them here.

Search Shortcuts

From nearly anywhere in Xero, pressing the forward slash key (/) on your keyboard will open the Xero search field. From there, many letters of the alphabet will bring up a different shortcut. Here they are listed below:

  • a – all bank accounts
  • b – all bills
  • c – all contacts
  • d – dashboard
  • e – all employees
  • f – files
  • i – all invoices
  • p – all purchase orders
  • q – all quotes
  • r – all reports
  • s – settings

You may not need or use all of the above, but remembering just a couple of them for your commonly used sections of Xero can really speed up your workflow. Remember, just type / then your letter of choice!

Xero Keyboard Shortcuts for Dates

Since accurate accounting and bookkeeping entries relies heavily on inputting the correct date, the folks over at Xero have built in some handy shortcuts for date entry. Here is a list of some of them:

  • tab t – today’s date
  • tom – tomorrow’s date
  • yes – yesterday’s date
  • next w – date of seven days from today
  • next m – date of today next month
  • next y – date of today next year
  • next [day] – date of the next chosen day
  • next [month] – date of today in chosen month
  • last or past – you can type last or past instead of next for the shortcuts above and you get the same results but in the past.
  • [number] – date in current month
  • *[number] – chosen date in next month
  • [number]/[month] – date in a month – you can also use minus sign instead of forward slash and you can reverse the entry and type the month first then the number.
  • [month]/[year] – first of the chosen month in the chosen year
  • +[number] – number of days after today’s date, or depending where you are inputting this, number of days after the invoice or bill date you are entering. You can add a d after the number if you want to – the result is the same.
  • +[number]w – number of weeks after today’s date, or depending where you are inputting this, number of weeks after the invoice or bill date you are entering.
  • +[number]m – number of months after today’s date, or depending where you are inputting this, number of months after the invoice or bill date you are entering.
  • +[number]y – number of years after today’s date, or depending where you are inputting this, number of years after the invoice or bill date you are entering.
  • – you can type minus instead of plus for the shortcuts above and you get the same results but in the past instead of the future.

So hopefully these shortcuts are helpful to you. There are a few more in specific areas in Xero with other keyboard shortcuts too and we will be back in another post with those. Or you can check out Xero’s official list here.
